Scams and red flags in Pakistan
After this lesson you can recognise the six most common money scams in Pakistan within a minute, and walk away before you lose anything.
Pakistan mein scams aur khatre ki nishaniyan
Scams ke naam har kuch mahine baad badal jate hain, lekin shakal wohi rehti hai: '3% rozana' ya '30 din mein double' wali schemes, 'VIP' signal groups jo sirf jeetne wali trades dikhate hain, fake apps jo withdrawal par 'fee' maangti hain, pump and dump, meethi baatein karne wale 'mentor', aur recovery scam jo pehle se lutay huay logon ko dobara lootte hain.
Hisaab khud dekhein: 3% rozana ka matlab hai ke ek saal mein Rs 50,000 taqreeban Rs 2.4 arab ban jayein.
Kya apna paisa nikaalne ke liye fee deni hai? Kya saboot sirf un ke bheje huay screenshots hain? Ek bhi 'haan' ho to wahin ruk jayein. Quran doosron ka maal na-haq khane se mana karta hai (2:188).
- Fixed ya bohat zyada munafa, jaldi ka dabao ya withdrawal par fee: ek nishani bhi kaafi hai, wahin ruk jayein.
- Signal aur 'VIP' groups aap ki fees ya aap ki der se ki gayi khareedari se kamate hain, aap ki kamyabi se nahi.
- Jo pehle fee le kar doobay paise wapas dilane ka wada kare, woh agla scam chala raha hai.
Poora sabaq neeche English mein hai. Quiz English mein hai; asaan alfaaz mein.
Asad, a pharmacist in Sargodha, joins a WhatsApp group called 'VIP Crypto Pakistan' that posts screenshots of 30% gains every day. He pays Rs 15,000 for membership, then is told to deposit on an app promising '3% daily profit'. His dashboard grows fast, so he adds more and brings in his brother-in-law. When he tries to withdraw Rs 400,000, the app asks for a 'tax clearance fee' first. He pays it. The app goes offline. A week later a 'recovery agent' messages him, offering to get it all back for Rs 25,000 in advance.
The six scams you will meet
Scams in Pakistan change names every few months, but the shapes stay the same. Learn the shapes and you will recognise the next version, whatever it is called, however polished it looks and whoever in your family shares it with you.
- Fixed-profit schemes: '3% daily' or 'double in 30 days', paid from new deposits until they stop.
- Signal and 'VIP' groups: show winners, hide losers, earn from fees or from selling to members.
- Fake apps and clone sites: fake profits on a dashboard, then a 'fee' to withdraw.
- Pump and dump: a group hypes a thin coin, then sells into the late buyers.
- Friendly strangers and 'mentors': trust built over weeks, sometimes with small early payouts.
- Recovery scams: fake agents or lawyers who charge victims upfront to 'get money back'.
Why smart people fall for them
These schemes are built around human weak points, not stupidity. Screenshots of other people's profits create social proof. 'Only 20 seats left' creates urgency. A small early withdrawal builds trust. A company registration certificate, or a video of a famous face that is often edited or fake, creates authority. A registration only means a company exists; it is not a licence to take your investment. Shame then keeps victims quiet, so the scheme keeps growing.
The one-minute test
Before you send money to anyone, ask these five questions. One yes is enough to walk away; you do not need to prove it is a scam first. Real opportunities survive a week of checking. Scams depend on you deciding today, before you talk to anyone.
- Is a fixed or very high return promised?
- Must I deposit on their app, or send money to a person's account?
- Is there pressure: limited seats, a deadline, a countdown?
- Do I have to pay anything to withdraw my own money?
- Are the only proofs screenshots and testimonials they sent me?
Why '3% daily' cannot be real
'3% daily' sounds modest. Compounded for 30 days, 1.03 to the power of 30 = 2.43, so Rs 50,000 becomes about Rs 121,363. For a year, 1.03 to the power of 365 is about 48,000, so the same Rs 50,000 would become about Rs 2.4 billion.
No real business earns that. Even the most celebrated investors are known for compounding around 20% a year over long periods, and very few ever manage that. The only way to pay 3% a day is with the next person's deposit, until new deposits slow down and the app disappears.
A 'VIP' group with 5,000 members paying Rs 3,000 a month earns 5,000 x Rs 3,000 = Rs 15,000,000, or Rs 1.5 crore, every month, whether members win or lose. That is the real business.
Scams are the clearest case of consuming wealth unjustly, which the Quran forbids (Quran 2:188). Trade is lawful through mutual consent (Quran 4:29), and consent won through lies, fake dashboards or false authority is not real consent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade the gharar sale (Sahih Muslim 1513), which scholars explain as a sale built on excessive uncertainty or deception. A fixed return promised on money you hand over also raises the riba concern. And joining 'only for the early profit' means that profit is taken from the people who join after you.
Education, not a fatwa. Where scholars differ, we say so. See what scholars say.
Believing you can 'take the early profit and leave before it collapses'. Many people in Pakistan joined schemes knowing the risk, received two small payouts, then added more money and brought relatives in. When the app froze, they lost their capital and their family's trust together. The early profit was bait, paid from someone else's loss.
Open Scam Check and paste a real message you have received, or this sample: 'Join our VIP group. 100% sure profit, 3% daily, only 20 seats left. Deposit via JazzCash today to activate.' Read every red flag it finds and match each one to the one-minute test. Then paste a 'recovery' offer, real or invented, and compare. Share what you learn with one relative who is in such groups.
Open Scam Check →Key takeaways
- A fixed or very high return, pressure to act today, or a fee to withdraw is a red flag, and one is enough to walk away.
- Signal and 'VIP' groups earn from your fees or your late buying, not from your success.
- Anyone who offers to recover lost money for an upfront fee is running the next scam.
