Currencies: bay al-sarf in practice
Money for money is a special contract. When two currencies differ, the rate can float freely but both sides must be delivered in the same session, before the parties part. That is bay al-sarf. Bank transfers that settle within the normal window are accepted by modern scholars as possession.
- Permitted: changing money for travel or business, sending a remittance, holding a foreign currency you actually own, settling a real invoice at spot.
- Not permitted: currency forwards, futures, options and CFDs, and leveraged retail forex, including 'swap-free' accounts. Removing the overnight interest fixes one problem and leaves the contract for difference and the borrowed exposure in place.
Pakistan has three rates side by side: the interbank rate banks use with each other, the open-market rate at exchange companies, and the rates inside cards and remittance apps. When the gap between them widens, the currency is under stress.
Barqish charts daily reference mid-rates for 22 pairs with a one-year high and low and a reading of the trend for the first currency of the pair. USD/PKR reading Favourable means the dollar has been strengthening steadily against the rupee; Cautious means it has been weakening or swinging.
The reading is context for planning a transfer, a purchase or savings. Barqish does not teach speculating on currencies, because the only permitted form is the spot exchange you actually need.
Test yourself
A broker offers a swap-free forex account with 50x leverage. Is trading on it permitted?
- Yes, no interest is charged
- No, it is still a leveraged contract for difference with no possession ✓
- Yes if you only trade USD/PKR
- Yes on Fridays
Removing the swap does not change the structure: borrowed exposure, no exchange of currencies, a bet on the rate. Most contemporary scholars do not permit it.
You send Rs 100,000 to family abroad through a remittance service that charges a flat fee. This is:
- Riba
- A permitted spot exchange with a service fee ✓
- Gharar
- A currency forward
Two currencies exchanged at an agreed rate with immediate delivery, plus a fee for the service. Permitted.
USD/PKR reads Cautious. It means:
- The rupee will crash
- You must buy dollars now
- The dollar has been weakening or swinging against the rupee; it is context, not a signal ✓
- The State Bank issued a warning
The reading describes the trend of the first currency against the second. It is educational context, not an instruction.
Roman Urdu mein parhein: Currencies: amal mein bay al-sarf
Paise ke badle paisa ek khaas muahida hai. Jab do currencies alag hon to rate azad ho sakta hai lekin dono taraf usi majlis mein, alag hone se pehle, hawale honi chahiye. Yehi bay al-sarf hai. Jadeed ulama aam settlement window mein poori hone wali bank transfers ko qabza maante hain.
- Jaaiz: safar ya karobar ke liye paise badalna, remittance bhejna, apni milkiyat ki foreign currency rakhna, asal invoice spot par settle karna.
- Najaaiz: currency forwards, futures, options aur CFDs, aur leveraged retail forex, 'swap-free' accounts samet. Overnight sood hatane se ek masla hal hota hai lekin contract for difference aur udhaar ka exposure wahin rehta hai.
Pakistan mein teen rates saath saath hain: interbank rate jo bank aapas mein istemal karte hain, exchange companies ka open-market rate, aur cards aur remittance apps ke andar ke rates. Jab in ka faasla barhe to currency dabao mein hai.
Barqish 22 pairs ke rozana reference mid-rates chart karta hai, ek saal ke high aur low ke saath, aur pair ki pehli currency ke trend ki reading. USD/PKR par Saazgaar ka matlab dollar rupay ke muqable mein tasalsul se mazboot ho raha hai; Ehtiyaat ka matlab kamzor ya jhoolta hua.
Reading transfer, khareed ya bachat ki planning ka context hai. Barqish currencies par satta nahi sikhata, kyunke sirf wohi spot exchange jaaiz hai jis ki aap ko asal zaroorat ho.
Aham baat: Abhi badlo, dono taraf, poora. Rate par kabhi contract nahi.
